BEEN A WHILE

WOW....i am verry terrible at keeping a blog.....i haven't written anything in this all summer....i am hoping that i can keep a better record of what i am doing here at the Academy....So...this summer i have been taking a class with Leonard DeLuna and a Photo Intensive with Connie Begg....it has been kind of a stressful summer.....but i have finished...well...almost....I have printed everything....but i think i may reprint a mural print. So for both classes i shot at the Marin Headlands, but i shot two completely different projects. For Leonard's class i shot more of a technical assignment dealing with textures, walls, and landscape that i enjoyed at the Headlands and then printed them in the darkroom on 16x20 paper, I then spot bleached and selenium toned the images to make them even more beautiful! For my Intensive class i shot macro images of textures and recreated them to be landscapes. I printed them in the darkroom as well, but i printed them as mural prints (3.3 ft. x 4.5 ft.) I then spot bleached them to bring out a bit more contrast....i chose not to selenium tone them because that would add a bit too much contrast to it, because it is a mural print it shouldn't be as contrasty. right now i am in the process of finishing the frames for the mural prints....i have stained them and tomorrow i am going to go to studio and finish bleaching them (1 more left), and then i am going to put the frame together and get the images ready to hang in the gallery.....we are having a show in the 688 sutter street gallery. I have printed 5 images for the show, but i know they won't all fit...i think i may be able to get 3 of the images to fit on the wall that has been designated to me.....I keep forgetting to go measure the wall and see what i can get to fit....so i guess i will just play it by ear on Tuesday (when we hang). I will soon have images of all of the prints i have done this summer....i still have to take photos of them....i think they are much too big to be able to scan.

Tin Types

here are the tintypes that i did for my historic process class.....I couldn't get the colors to match what they really were.....this is as close as i could get it....the scanner wasn't doing so well...and every time i photographed it you could see my reflection....so this is the best i could do with what i had!

I am starting to get very frutrated with the gum printing process!!!  It just isn't doing what i want and even though i preshrink my paper it is still shrinking after my first exposure and my neg won't register exactly right....some images this adds a nice effect...others it looks horrible!  I want to be able to control it!!!

I am super excited to get to run in the Bay 2 Breakers 12K this year!! Some friends and i are considering dressing up in costumes for the run!! I thought the history of Bay 2 Breakers was kind of interesting. There are even people who run the race backwards...like Salmon!

Here is a photo my friend Francesca took of me.

So I was checking out my friend Jeff's friend Alison's Blog....wow...that was difficult to say.....and i saw an image of her receiving a box in the mail....when she opened it the box had a balloon in it....and then she popped it.....I was confused......and then there was a link that lead to beingeverywhere. A project that is being done by artist Stefan Riebel. I think it is very interesting and worth looking at....and even participating in....i think i am going to....Just a thought!
I went on a little photo excursion with Mindo yesterday and had a lot of fun! We shot up some pinhole 4x5, polaroid's with the hasselblad, and some slide film....even stayed late at the Sutro and shot some long exposure night shots....I am hoping to get some of that up once i get it developed/scaned!

Some portraits from class

Here are a few photos that i have taken during my portraiture class at the Academy of Art University. I am really enjoying learning the lighting but i am definitely out of my comfort zone by photographing people. But, i am learning a great deal.

Disregarded Landscapes

Here are some of the images that i presented for my Thesis Project Proposal. My Project is titled Disregarded Landscapes. Here is the abstract that i presented with the project to give an idea of what the project is about.

A lot of my life I was unable to see textures clearly and I have become fascinated with textures and small-scale things since getting glasses. Also, I have very much come to miss landscapes and the outdoors since being in San Francisco. I feel that the city abstracts the idea of wilderness and tries to recreate it with parks. Although to me this seems unnatural, and something I don’t enjoy as much as the real wooded areas. When I am walking through the city I look for the landscape, within the city, that I have come to miss. Both of these are reasons behind my images. I have combined the two and now search for microscopic landscapes within the city. I find areas that are pleasing to me, and usually have a lot of decay and texture and I am photographing them with the intentions of creating a landscape. I am photographing the project with a Canon EOS 1 and slide film. I am using a 100mm macro lens with the aperture at f2.8. The images will be very ambiguous and open for interpretation. The images are meant to become something personal to the viewer, to remind the viewer of a familiar area. The 16-20 images will be 24” x 36” flush mounted on black gator board. The images will be large and over-powering and have the dichotomy of being very small-scale objects pushed to something that is so large and overwhelming.

Historic Process

I don't know if this is going to work or not...but i have made a photobucket album and i think that would be an easier way of posting images because then i can have a folder of images instead of it showing one image at a time and taking up so much space on my blog. so we will see if this works.
